The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned its presidential slot to the northern part of the country ahead 2019 general elections, in what is perceived to be a calculated move to bypass the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) whose candidate is currently the incumbent president, Muhammadu Buhari. This Day reports that a source at a secret meeting held by some of the party chieftains in Lapai town, the home town of the former governor of Niger state, Abudulkhadir Kure, disclosed that the vice presidential ticket would be zoned to the eastern part because of the region’s continued loyalty to the party. “We are going to give the vice-presidential ticket to the East, the east has been very loyal to the PDP. It is going to be a payback time and assurance that they will get the presidential ticket in 2024,” the source said. Meanwhile, a member
of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Ambassador Wali Jibril, who spoke with newsmen before the commencement of – Kure’s daughter Fatiha’s wedding, confirmed that the party had zoned the presidency to the North for the 2019 general elections. Jibril, who was the only PDP leader who agreed to speak with journalists after the secret meeting further disclosed that a search for “a credible candidate had begun in earnest.” “We have zoned the presidency to the north but the vice-president and other positions have not been zoned because we are still consulting.” He also revealed that the party had already commenced reconciliatory moves to bring back aggrieved members, including those who have defected, to assist the party to secure victory in 2019. Several hours before the wedding by the chief imam of Lapai, Sheikh Bashir, at the Lapai central mosque, prominent members of the PDP were in a meeting at the private home of Kure. Those present comprised the former governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau, Senator Smart Adeyemi, Senator Philip Ajuda and Senator Isah Mohammed. The party chieftains refused to speak with journalists when they were through with the meeting as they headed straight to the central mosque, which is the venue of the wedding ceremony. There was huge jubilation among some PDP youths upon sighting the former governor of Kano state, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, among the dignitaries. The PDP youths reportedly shouted his praises and pleaded with him to return to the party. Channels TV reports that Makanjuola Ogundipe, the national vice chairman of the South-West chapter of the party recently declared his support for a Northern candidate, and urged other regions to do the same as only that can guarantee strength for the party. Ogundipe in his remarks at the stakeholders’ meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo state, said the uproar that followed the proposal for the North to retain the position of the national chairman of PDP was not necessary. This Day in its earlier report says the PDP has urged the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to immediately arrest and prosecute the former governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu.
